Sometimes our fly fishing friends aren't human

I've made a lot of fishing friends on line over the years and can say that most of them have been great experiences. One of those friends is Keith Meyers. One of the things I like about Keith besides the fact that he lives in Idaho and catches lots of fish, is his choice of fishing companions. You see, Keith fishes with his dogs Abi and Madi-Sue. Or did until Madi passed away a short while ago. This may seem like a bit of a strange post to some, especially for a guy that is owned by Bubby the non-fishing dog. But for those of you who have pets that you love and fish with, I think it's a fitting tribute to man's best friend. Keith, thank you for allowing me to post this. Your adventures in and around Idaho were always a little special because of your companions.

  1. There's a guy who I run into very often on my local stream that always has his dog with him. You can tell it's definitely a bonding thing. Kinda cool. Me....I have 3 cats. I doubt they'd fair too well wading across a limestone.

    1. Hey Mike, nice to see you. (figuratively speaking of course.)I see a few guys once in awhile with their companions and I have to say that it makes me a bit jealous. On the cat thing, I think it's always worth a try...after all, cats come cheap.

  2. Nice post.
One other attribute to fishing with mans best friend is the fact they don't tell.

    1. Hey Alan that's a good point. They also won't (hopefully) out-fish you!

  3. I took my dog a few times but got tired of the continuous barking.

    1. Howdy Joel, yeah I hear you. That's the big reason Bubby will never be a fishing dog. He barks at everything he doesn't like, so he sure isn't going to like the small fish I catch. He'll let me and everyone else in the area know.

  4. Dogs make the best fishing partners , without question.
They're always on time and ready to go on a whim.
Those last minute excuses like "the kids sick , the wifes pissed , etc..etc... never come up when your fishing partner is a dog.
And as someone else said , my fishing lies are safe when the only witness is my dog!

    1. HPFF, I would love to have a well behaved fishing dog to take out with me. That said, I would also like a well behaved fishing wife. She consistently outfishes me and looks better in waders than I do. The rest of the stuff...the excuses, well I have to go now. My wife wants me to clean the toilets.

  5. Hmmm... I am glad that some small dogs work out to take to the river. My Hannah will stay put, I'm afraid. I don't need more distractions than I already have... Fun pics of your Idaho friend and his pooches.

    1. Hmmmm back at you. I can't say for 100% but they say our dogs take after our traits. Now I now why Bubby barks and growls at insurance commercials and my kid's friends. You my dear friend have nothing but tried and true fishing traits to pass on to Hannah, falling down, poking yourself with sharp objects and I'm sure she would bark at me as well. Hope your day continues to be good.

Man's best friend can give one that feel good feeling even on skunk days on the water. Who doesn't love their pets? Thanks for sharing

    1. Hi Bill. Truth be told, the reason I posted this particular piece is that somewhere else I hang out nixed it. I thought Keith and the girls deserved some thanks for the pleasure of reading about their adventures. So, the question of who doesn't love their pets is stored in my head.

    1. Thank you Kevin! It's nice to see that the good folks here pretty much agree with us. I guess if someone found this objectionable that they just moved on. And that's okay too. No harm no foul.
