Weather or not...

Yesterday was one of those Winter days that we along the Front Range of the Rockies can always look forward to.  Despite the cold and windy temperatures last week, the weekend brought us 50+ degrees and great fishing weather.

Before I go any further about the fishing, I need to talk about the earlier part of my day. A trip to Charlie's Fly Box in Arvada. Those of you who are not familiar with Charlie's (especially if you tie your own flies) you must be living, uh...somewhere else. You won't find a more complete stock of tying materials anywhere. But this isn't a commercial for Charlie's Fly Box. I visit a lot of fly shops, but when I got to Charlie's yesterday afternoon I was amazed. It was packed. Many of the folks were there to watch Herman DeGala's Tying Demo. (Check out the link to see Herman's flies and many others as well.) The rest were there to shop...it was a madhouse. But this isn't a commercial for Charliesflybox.

I actually made the 20 minute trip to visit Charlie's newest gangsta, Jay Zimmerman and to pick up a couple of copies of Jay's new book, The Top Ten Guide To Fly Fishing: A common-sense approach to the tools and rules of the sport, published by Lyons Press. Good job Jay, it looks like a great book! Click this link to order a copy. (it's cheaper)

Well, I guess this does sound a little like a commercial doesn't it?

Anyway, enough of that. On to the fishing report! I didn't go, but I understand that a well known Boulder County stream was looking pretty hot yesterday and should continue to heat up as the warm weather stays with us for awhile. But what do I know...I don't fish in the Winter.

  1. I had heard through the media grapevine that Jay had set up shop at Charlie's. Sounds like a great place to spend a bad winter day touching all the fly tying goodies. I will probably have to limit my shopping at Charlie's to the "online" store as I don't get down that way too often.

    1. Mel, I live half way between you and the shop. Say the word any time and we can meet up and I'll drive the rest of the way. It's a place you've got to experience at least once in a while.

  2. So here i sit waiting for the weather to get better.I,like you Howard like it just a little bit warmer.Years ago when i was active with TU we would have our monthly frostbite trips.Remember going to Cheeseman canyon or the Thompson below Lake Estes when it was just bitter cold out.Cant do that anymore.Back then the nice thing about it was the only other people that were there were the ones you went with
Ive heard Charlies is a great shop.never been there, but if your ever in the Longmont area stop in to the Laughing Grizzly fly shop. They probably run a close second in tying supplies. If you do go on a weekend my friend Dick will be working. He's old like you
    Sorry Howard

    1. Oh Wisetrout, I hear you. Even on a 56 degree day...it's still winter. I've been to the Laughing Grizzly. I saw Jay tie there last winter. It's a great store and it's my idea of what 3 Geezers looks like in my mind. I'll say hi to Dick the old guy like me next time I get up there.

  3. Is Jay working at Charlie's now? That's great if he is. Boulder Creek looked great yesterday. I ate lunch over it in the library with my kids.

    1. Hey Marc! Yes, Jay is at Charlie's. The reports I was hearing said, Fool, what are you doing indoors? Maybe tomorrow.

    1. Hey Alan, I'll bet we also have something that you don't have...fire warnings out on the Eastern plains. I feel another snow on the horizon although it is staying light longer.

    2. With detail and accuracy like this, you could be a weatherman.

    6. Yea, life's finally slowing down and I'm starting to pop up more. Also might start that blog-thingy back up. I'm moving in two weeks and will be 3 miles down the road from a large lake. Sort of makes me feel obligated to. Ha!
